Mooc by Embry Riddle Aeronautical University
(self-paced, in American-English, duration about 12 h, platform canvas.net)
Thrust, drag, weight, lift, this very interesting and well designed course is likely to introduce you to a variety of subjects pertaining to the aviation industry. It will teach you a lot of the ground knowledge that you need to know to be a successful pilot and might improve your Aviation-English.
Content:
- Aircraft systems
- Aerodynamics
- Flight instruments
- Airports
- Airspace
- Radio communications
- Aeromedical factors
- Aviation Weather
- Performance and Navigation
This course contains an introduction, followed by nine lessons and three multiple choice tests. The course is split into three parts. In each part, there will be three lessons, followed by a test. The material in each lesson will be presented in video format. You can download the video transcription.
At the completion of each lesson, you will have a multiple choice quiz. Each quiz (15 questions, maximum 30 minutes) and test (30 questions, maximum 1 hour) will be graded automatically and a minimum score of 80% is required to move on to the next lesson. So, it’s a kind of “light” version of the PPL(A) and achievement conditions are similar, but the number of attempts is unlimited. Each lesson should take about an hour to complete, more or less.
Duration of this self-paced Mooc doesn’t seem to be limited. Nevertheless I suggest to achieve the three lessons of each part in a short time, as the test is about the three lessons. I think you should achieve the whole course in about six weeks, or less. You may submit questions on the discussion forum, but there are not many students enrolled at the same time and the forum is often cleaned and updated.
If you’ve achieved successfully all quizzes and tests, you can download a social badge of achievement.
My personal over-all score was 95% (one single attempt for each quiz/test).
