Official course description
Participants in this course will be taught the technological aspects of aircraft engines, their design, and operation. Additionally, economical parameters and legal issues of approval will be introduced. Based on the flight mission analysis and other constraints, the methodology and objective of engine design will be illustrated taking into account component matching and aircraft integration. Furthermore, participants will learn to estimate the technological potential of advanced propulsion concepts.
Type : self-paced
Language : english
Requirements:
A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or comparable programmes and particularly an understanding of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics are advantageous to this course. Previous knowledge in the basics of turbomachinery is strongly recommended.
What you’ll learn
- Mission Analysis & requirements Statutory registration regulations
- Overall design of a jet engine
- Component design of Compressor, Turbine, Combustion chamber and Nozzle
- Coupling of Compressor & Turbine with Nozzle
- Novel concepts (GTF, Oper Rotor, Electrical drives, MEE)
- Novel thermodynamic cycles (Intercooling, heat exchanger, new fuels)
The Course structure
This course is a co-production of the Institute of Jet Propulsion and Turbomachinery of TUBS and the Institute of Turbomachinery and Fluid Dynamics of LUH.
Review
This is a very specialised and mathematical equation based Mooc (better : lecture) about Aircraft Engines. Each lesson contains one or more whiteboard animated and commented videos. Different engine types – Turbojet, Ramjet, Scramjet, Turbofan and Turboprop – and its components are presented, in establishing equations about inlet and outlet components, compressors, combustors, turbines. The Mooc addresses more to students who are already studying in aeronautics than to a large public (140 enrolled participants since 2016). Indeed, it is the online version of a classroom course (equivalent 21 hours) offered by the two mentioned universities, in 2016/17. For the last three lessons – Aeroacoustics, Technological Standards, Innovative Concepts – there are no more documents or ressources available. Currently, the forum is inactive, and there is no possibility to pass a test.
