This course introduces participants to the regulatory foundations of aircraft accident investigation and investigative techniques specific to major accident investigations. It covers the technical aspects of the aircraft accident investigation process starting with preparation for investigation through report writing. Particular emphasis is placed on the study of human factors and survival investigative techniques and the application of accident investigation findings in industry and research. Participants will have the opportunity to practice evidence collection techniques via the first-of-its-kind Virtual Aircraft Crash Lab . A critical analysis of selected aircraft accidents and an evaluation of causal factors are covered.
This course is designed to not only explore investigative techniques, but to also demonstrate the need for a comprehensive investigation process; the application of hazard identification, assessment, and mitigation/control; and the relationship of human factors in mishaps.
- Module One: Introduction to the Accident Investigation Process and Human Factors Investigations
- Module Two: Survival Factors Investigation, Scene Safety, and Application of Findings in Industry
- Module Three: Systems and Structures Investigation Techniques
Most of the MOOC coursework will be asynchronous, providing students with the flexibility to watch lectures and work on assignments on their own timetable. The heart of MOOC learning lies in peer-to-peer interaction outside of the online classroom. Students will view recorded lectures and read course material, but they will also share ideas with fellow MOOC classmates on discussion boards and social media platforms. Students will not receive college credit for completing the MOOC.
